1654-1660: Karl X Gustav and how large parts of Denmark became Swedish
Part 31: From Vikings to Modern Sweden: A Chronological Journey through Swedish History
Just over three years after Queen Kristina's coronation in October 1650 (previous article in this series), Sweden got a new king: Karl X Gustav, who was Swedish monarch between 1654 and 1660. Karl X Gustav came to change Sweden's history forever, because it was during his reign as Skåne, Blekinge, Bohuslän became Swedish, and Halland became permanently Swedish. The fact that I, as a Stockholmer, am sitting here in Skåne and writing is therefore due to his decision in the 17th century. It was during his time in power that southern Sweden got its current map. It happened through both a bold and a foolhardy war.
